Ilheú Mole
Ilheú Mole
Having its origins in a Surtseyan eruption, which is characterized by occurring in shallow places (sea or lakes), Mole islet is what remains of a Surtseyan cone, object of marine erosion and which resulted from a submarine eruption after the drainage of delta-type lava, which formed the coast platform of Porto Moniz.
Being the most extreme point of this locality, a lighthouse was built on this islet, to aid navigation in the troubled North Sea.
