Black Scabbard Fish
(Aphanopus carbo)
Black Scabbard Fish is a deep sea fish with huge eyes that is very ugly but so delicious.
Madeira is one of the only known spawning grounds of this fish and it is believed it has a circular migratory life cycle, as the young move further into the North Atlantic to feed and grow and then return to breed in Madeira when mature.
They live between 800 and 1200 meters deep and are fished using very long lines with multiple baited hooks.
