Embroidery
It is said that the first embroidery dates back to the beginnings of the colonization of the island, when small strips of cloth were garnished by the nobles in order to decorate household items, as well as clothing.
However, it was not until around 1850, during its presence at an industrial exhibition held in Funchal that the interest of foreigners residing or passing through the island aroused. Since then, it has been widely exported to the most diverse countries, particularly England and Germany, thus giving origin to the Madeira embroidery industry that lasts until today.
Currently, embroidery can be appreciated in different types of fabrics, namely, linen, cotton, silk and organdy.
